Q: What is a freight forwarder?

A: Freight forwarding is a service used by companies that deal in international or multi-national import and export. While the freight forwarder doesn't actually move the freight itself, it acts as an intermediary between the client and various transportation services. Sending products from one international destination to another can involve a multitude of carriers, requirements and legalities. A freight forwarding service handles the considerable logistics of this task for the client, relieving what would otherwise be a formidable burden.

The freight forwarding service utilizes established relationships with carriers of all kinds, from air freighters and trucking companies, to rail freighters and ocean liners. Freight forwarding services negotiate the best possible price to move the product along the most economical route by working out various bids and choosing the one that best balances speed, cost and reliability.

A freight forwarding service generally provides one or more estimates to the client along with advisement, when necessary. Considerations that effect price will range from origin and destination to special requirements, such as refrigeration or, for example, transport of potentially hazardous materials. Assuming the client accepts the forwarder's bid, the freight is readied for shipping. The freight forwarding service then undertakes the responsibility of arranging the transport from point of origin to destination.

One of the many advantages of using freight forwarding is that it handles ancillary services that are a part of the international shipping business. Insurance and customs documentation and clearance are some examples. As a consolidator, a freight forwarding service might also provide Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) documentation, or bills of lading.

A good freight forwarding service can save the client untold time and potential headaches while providing reliable transportation of products at competitive rates. A freight forwarding service is an asset to almost any company dealing in international transportation of goods, and is especially helpful when in-house resources are not versed in international shipping procedures.

Q: Who is the consignee and who is the consignor or shipper?

A: The consignor (or shipper) is the person who is the originator of the shipment. A consignee is the person who is the receiver of the shipment.

Q: Does my shipment need any special packaging for freight shipping?

A: Yes your freight needs to be packaged and or palletized; it is the shipper’s responsibility for packaging the goods. Shrink wrap, corrugated boxing, palletizing and strapping or banding is the most common type of packaging for the freight industry.

Q: Do I need to know the weight of my goods?

A: In most cases you can estimate your weight on the bill of lading. But be aware that the carrier can and will adjust the weight, which will determine your final cost. The final weight is known as the "chargeable weight". For Air Freight, chargeable weight may be the dimensional weight if greater than the gross weight of the shipment. If you have underestimated the weight, and the shipment reaches a central terminal, a dock master will judge the goods and perhaps reweigh the goods. If reweighed, you will be billed for the new actual weight. Each mode of transportation has its own set of rules...

Q: Can I have my goods picked up at a certain time to meet my schedule?

A: We will try to arrange your pick up to meet your time table. We can arrange for pick up on a certain days of the week but there will be limitations for certain times/days.

A: An exporter is responsible for several documents. Some freight forwarders (including us) will do much of the paperwork for a customer, but the shipper is ultimately responsible for making sure the documents are correct.

Q: What overseas shipping services does the Freight Forwarding Company offer?

A: Through our partners, there are a number of overseas shipping services that The Freight Forwarding Company offers. We can first evaluate the type of equipment required to move your cargo. We can arrange 20’ standard containers, 40’ standards or 40’ high cube containers. And if your overseas shipping needs specialized equipment, we can arrange a variety of containers as required such as flat racks and open top containers.

Services can also be arranged if you have large, heavy or oversized project cargo. We can furnish any heavy haul equipment or machines that might be required to handle special cargo via break bulk. If needed, we can also supply Ro/Ro service, which utilizes specialized roll on, roll off ships. These special vessels allow vehicles and heavy machinery to be driven on and off for overseas shipping. Services requiring any special permits to move your cargo to the port, would be obtained by the carrier who we would contract to ship your goods.  When needed, The Freight Forwarding Company can arrange to have your cargo loaded and secured by a professional packer who would ensure your load would not shift to help eliminate the possibility of damages.

We partner with a number of LCL (Less Than Container Load) consolidators for smaller cargo. Price, service and your delivery needs are taken into consideration when deciding which consolidator to use.  Overseas shipping services such as export packing and container loading can be arranged.

If your overseas shipping entails the movement of hazardous cargo, we negotiate on your behalf with the shipping line to confirm their acceptance of your cargo. In order to determine this, you would need to supply us with the UN#, the Class# and the IMDG Code and Packing Group.

Q: Should we let our supplier/vendor handle the transportation of our freight?

A: The Company who arranges the transportation is in control of the routing and the costs. If the proper handling of the transportation of your equipment or goods are important to you, it is to your advantage, in most cases, to take control of these arrangements. In a lot of cases you can reduce your costs as well. The Freight Forwarding Company can manage this process for you and assist you in moving your goods in the most efficient manner and at very competitive rates.  Please contact us for a free consultation.

Q: What is the maximum permitted size for an air freight forwarding shipment?
A: The type of aircraft used will determine the maximum allowable size. However, most air freight is shipped on passenger aircraft and it is prudent to restrict your shipment to less than 3 meters in length x 2 meters in width x 1.5 meters in height.

There are exceptions to this rule, however. It is possible to ship as much cargo as would fit into a 53 ft. trailer. However this would be booked on a special non-passenger aircraft called a combi freighter.

Please ask one of our representatives if you’re not sure.

Q:  How do airlines determine chargeable weight on air freight forwarding shipments?
A:  Chargeable weight on air freight forwarding shipments is based on whichever is greater between actual weight and volume weight.

A: As a global shipping company we provide single source logistics to anywhere in the world. We have representation in every major trading market making us a truly worldwide shipping company. Q: Why do you require dimensions and weights to get a rate quote for LCL (less than container load) or air freight shipments?

LCL and air freight shipment rates are based on volume or gross weight, whichever is greater.  In order to calculate the volume of a shipment, the dimensions of each piece are required. If the volume weight exceeds the actual gross weight, the shipment is rated at the volume weight. If the volume weight is less than the actual weight, the shipment is rated at the actual weight.
